Farewell to our National Treasure and Batik Master, Sarkasi Said

Maya Gallery is saddened with the passing of Singaporean artist Mr Sarkasi Said. He died peacefully at the age of 81, in his home last evening, 14 Oct 2021. A batik master, highly regarded for his unconventional wax-resist techniques, Sarkasi’s artworks have been exhibited internationally and can be found in public and private collections. He received the Cultural Medallion in 2020. Maya Gallery is honoured to have worked with him in two of our exhibitions—“Sambal Goreng” (2019) and “Reflection” (2021).

Always ready and willing to share his stories and experiences of his art journey, Sarkasi Said was very humble of his achievements. We offer our condolences to Mr Sarkasi’s family during these difficult times.

Innaa lillaahi wa innaa ilaihi raajiuun. From Him we come, to Him we return.
Semoga rohnya dicucuri rahmat dan ditempatkan bersama orang-orang yang beriman. Aamiin.
